Bruce Meets Bubbles

In late September 1989, Springsteen took a long motorcycle trip—en route to the Grand Canyon—and wound up stopping in at Matt’s Saloon, a biker bar in Prescott, Arizona. A local outfit, the Mile High Band, was onstage and stunned to discover that the Boss, who had rode in from Los Angeles, was in their favorite watering hole.

Bruce ordered a beer and took the stage with the house band for versions of “Sweet Little Sixteen,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Route 66,” and his own “I’m on Fire,” but passed on an offer to play “Pink Cadillac” during his hour onstage when he couldn’t remember the words.

By the time he was done playing, attendance at the bar just off Route 89 rose from around one dozen to one hundred. Springsteen—accompanied by three motorcycle companions and a bodyguard in a van—left behind a swarm of autograph seekers.

During his visit, he also learned of barmaid Brenda “Bubbles” Pechanec’s tall medical bills. A week afterward, the cancer survivor received a check from Springsteen for $100,000 to help with her expenses.
